What is Sports Massage Therapy?
Sports Massage Therapy is based on various elements of Swedish massage and incorporates other techniques such as compression, friction and myofascial release.
This treatment is not just for sports people, anyone can benefit from this kind of massage. The aim is to balance all soft tissues therefore promoting flexibility, preventing injury and speeding up the recovery process.
Sports Massage Therapy involves the treatment of:
back and neck pain
shoulder stiffness or instability
sprains and strains
recovery from sporting events
recovery from injury
stress reactions in the body causing tension
restricted range of movement
As a yoga teacher I often get asked about injuries or imbalances in the body and how yoga can best assist in alleviating symptoms such as back pain, arthritis, frozen shoulder and repetitive strain injuries to name but a few. Massage therapy gives me the tools to treat some of these complaints directly using massage techniques, to help bodies regain or maintain full health, to improve mobility and increase comfort, ease and range of movement. Much of the success of massage comes from improving circulation, stretching muscle fibres, and relaxing the body, for me yoga and massage really do go hand in hand.
